3.1 Introduction & Uses of Electricity

Electricity is used across various domains of daily life. Common applications can be grouped into:

Cooking: Electric kettle, microwave, toaster, oven.
Lighting: Homes, offices, streets, factories.
Transportation: Trains, electric cars, lifts, escalators.
Heating & Cooling: Fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, geysers.
Communication & Entertainment: Mobile phones, internet, television, radio.

Caution: Mains electricity from wall sockets is highly dangerous. For experiments, only use portable, low-voltage sources like electric cells or batteries.

3.2 Components of a Simple Electrical Circuit

3.2.1 Electric Cell & Battery

Electric Cell: A portable source of electrical energy with two terminals:
- Positive Terminal (+): Represented by the metal cap.
- Negative Terminal (-): Represented by the flat metal disc.
Battery: A combination of two or more cells connected in series (positive terminal of one cell connected to the negative terminal of the next).

3.2.2 Electric Lamps (Incandescent vs. LED)

Incandescent Lamp: Contains a thin wire called a filament that gets hot and glows when current passes through it. It has two terminals (metal case and metal tip) that do not touch each other.
Light Emitting Diode (LED): A modern, filament-free lamp. It has polarity and only allows current to flow in one direction:
- Longer lead: Positive terminal.
- Shorter lead: Negative terminal.

3.2.3 Electrical Circuit & Switch

Electrical Circuit: A complete, unbroken path that allows electric current to flow. By convention, current flows from the positive (+) to the negative (-) terminal.
Electric Switch: A simple device used to complete (close) or break (open) an electrical circuit.
- Closed Circuit (ON): The path is complete; current flows; the lamp glows.
- Open Circuit (OFF): There is a gap in the path; current cannot flow; the lamp does not glow.
Fused Bulb: Occurs when the filament of an incandescent lamp breaks, opening the circuit and preventing it from glowing.

3.3 Circuit Diagrams

A circuit diagram is a simplified representation of an electrical circuit using standard international symbols:

Electric Cell: Two parallel lines (long line is +, short thick line is -).
Battery: Multiple alternating long and short parallel lines.
Electric Lamp: A circle enclosing a looped filament symbol.
LED: A triangle pointing to a vertical bar with two outward-pointing arrows.
Switch (ON): A continuous line with two terminal dots connected.
Switch (OFF): A line raised at an angle, showing a gap between terminals.
Wire: A straight line.

3.4 Electrical Conductors and Insulators

Conductors: Materials that allow electric current to flow through them easily (e.g., copper, silver, gold, aluminum, and the human body).
Insulators: Materials that do not allow electric current to pass through them (e.g., plastic, rubber, glass, wood, ceramics).
Safety Application: Electrical wires and plug tops are made of conductors to carry current, but are covered with insulators (like plastic or rubber) to protect users from electric shocks.
AC vs. DC:
- Direct Current (DC): Provided by cells/batteries; flows in one direction; powers small portable devices.
- Alternating Current (AC): Provided by power plants to wall sockets; reverses direction periodically; powers large household appliances.
